Lieutenant-Colonel Guy Anthony Smith, CD (Retd) -
Guy first joined the military in 1965 as an Army Cadet at Blakelock High School in Oakville, in 1967 progressed to the Reserves with “The Lorne Scots” and in 1974, enrolled in the Canadian Forces and was commissioned into The Royal Canadian Regiment. He served in numerous regimental and staff appointments at platoon, support weapons, company and battalion level including operations officer for the Special Service Force, in Petawawa. In 1989 he was promoted Major and commanded 2 RCR’s Combat Support Company during OP SALON (OKA Crisis 1990). Subsequently assigned to the Royal Canadian School of Infantry he served as Officer Commanding Tactics Company from 1991 through 1994, with responsibility for overseeing the final phase of Infantry Officer Training, Company Sergeants Major and Platoon Warrant Officers Courses as well as the advanced courses in Reconnaissance and Anti-Armor (TOW).
In 1995 he transferred to the Supplementary Reserve, allowing him time to pursue private interests. He again transferred to the Primary Reserve in November 2001, joining The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment) and in September 2003 he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer of “The Riley’s” an appointment he fulfilled until February 2007. On change of command he immediately volunteered to serve in Afghanistan, as the senior Canadian Liaison Officer from Regional Command South (RC(S)), Task Force Afghanistan’s higher headquarters, to Headquarters International Security Assistance Force (HQ ISAF) in Kabul. On return he completed his career as Training and Regional Liaison Officer for 31 Canadian Brigade Group.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith served abroad in Africa, Cyprus, Germany, Norway, Turkey and Afghanistan. He is a graduate of numerous Canadian Forces advanced courses, Canadian Forces Staff School and Canadian Forces Land Command and Staff College. He is a member of the RHLI Regimental Senate and past President of the Canadian Infantry Association (Central Ontario Branch). He is a member, past executive and volunteer with Bronte Branch 486, The Royal Canadian Legion.
As a career highlight Lieutenant-Colonel Smith had the honour of serving in Afghanistan at the same time as his daughter, Captain Stephanie Smith, a critical care nurse who completed two six-month tours in the Canadian Role 3 Military Medical Unit in Kandahar.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith retired from the military in 2011 after more than 34 years of service. In 2011 he created “Host a Veteran Fishing” (HAVET), a not for profit, that elevates awareness of the contributions of all Veterans, hosts an annual Veterans Salmon Derby and raises funds for Military Family Resource Centres (charity), and various other organizations which assist military families in need with focus on Afghanistan Veterans.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith lives in Oakville, and is married to Carolyn Petersen. They have five grown children and two grandsons and one baby grand daughter.
Margaret Good is a philanthropist, author and business owner with a strong background in accounting and finance. She has served on many board over the past 40 years in various positions from Treasurer to Board Chair.
Melanie has a background in Accounting and bookkeeping and event planning and has been operating her own business since 2009 doing bookkeeping for small businesses in the Oakville area.
She has been working with Havet Fishing derby in assisting in organizing their events since 2011. Assisting in organizing a Gala Dinner in 2011/2012 and a Fishing Derby in 2011-2022. Also organizing the 10th Annual event taking place on June 10,2023.
She is a self motivated worker but also enjoys working as a team member.
